LISNEAL AWARDS SCHEME
The Lisneal Awards Scheme was set up with the aim to encourage pupils to get involved in all aspects of school life, promote pupil self esteem, reinforce positive behaviour and reward those pupils who achieve. The Scheme seeks to celebrate success and achievement in all areas of school including academic activities, music, drama and sport.
The Scheme is based on a points system – points are awarded depending on the pupil achievement and the activities undertaken. Pupils can achieve Sport, Merit or Music Badges with 3 points and an Honours Tie with 6 points. Honours Ties are usually only awarded to pupils in Year 12 and above unless the circumstances are exceptional. The Honours award recognises outstanding and long term commitment to school. Pupils are encouraged to get involved in school during Year 8 and 9 and start applying for awards in Year 10 and above.
- Examples of activities / achievements that can count towards awards are:
- Academic achievements – e.g. exam success / awards and certificates achieved at Prize Night
- Participation in extra-curricular activities – e.g. Duke of Edinburgh / musical activities / sports teams / S.U.
- Holding points of responsibility – e.g. sports captain / form captain / prefect / librarian
- Assistance with school activities – e.g. open night / prize night / concerts / shows / competitions
Points can also be awarded for any single outstanding achievement such as 100 % attendance over a number of years or raising a large amount of money for charity
It should be stressed that participation in and commitment to activities should be continuous and long term, usually over 2 years. To apply for any award pupils are simply required to complete and submit an awards form with the details and dates of their achievements. This form must be signed by the teacher involved in the activity and handed in by the presentation deadline date.
Presentations are held during the year and take place during an extended assembly. Since 2004 over 100 pupils from years 10 to 14 have achieved awards and past guest speakers at presentations include local Commonwealth judo player Lisa Bradley, football coach Liam Beckett, Des Farrell, General Manager of Foyleside Shopping Centre and John Magowan, former Principal of Lisneal.
