
Lisneal College Science Department comprises of nine
highly qualified teachers and two excellent lab technicians. There are seven well appointed teaching laboratories fitted out to the highest specification, one computer suite and a, yet to be commissioned, greenhouse.
Science is taught at all levels throughout the school.
At Key Stage Three:
The school follows the common curriculum in years 8, 9 and 10. Classes are streamed according to ability and progress at their own pace.
At Key stage Four:
Lower band pupils complete an Entry Level Science course over a two year period.
Middle band pupils complete GCSE Core Science over a two year period.
Higher band pupils complete GCSE Core Science in Year 11 and GCSE Additional Science in Year 12.
At A level, pupils are offered Single Award Applied Science and Double Award Applied Science.
The Double Award is offered as part of the StepUp programme in partnership with the University of Ulster, Local Industries and a cluster of other similar school in the area. StepUp up offers our students the advantage of lectures, seminars and practicals at the University of Ulster (Magee, Coleraine and Jordanstown) and visits on site to local industries using science as a base for their production. StepUp has a phenomenal success rate of over 99%. It is seen as a model of best practice by educationalists through out the UK.
As a department we are keen to participate in challenges and visits outside school. Our Year 8 pupils take part annually in the Salter’s Festival of Chemistry ay UU Coleraine.
