GCSE History
‘A’Level History
Our History Department strives to make history as exciting and dynamic as possible. All pupils study history in a stimulating and interesting environment and they are given the chance to make History come to life by regular outside visits e.g. Day trips to The Somme Centre: The Ulster American Folk Park; The Ulster Transport Museum: The Tower Museum and through educational stays e.g. Krakow, Poland and Ypres, Belgium.
Key stage 3
The Department ensures that Key Stage 3 pupils study a wide range of historical periods for example a detailed study of medieval life; a case study on the Native American Indians; a broad study of the period 1500 -1700 including the Spanish Armada, the English Civil War and the Williamite wars. Older pupils in this age range get to carry out an in depth study of The First World War, and ICT orientated study of the Holocaust and a broader look at Ireland from1800 -1925.
Key stage 4 – GCSE
History is one of the most popular choices at Lisneal for GCSE study and pupils follow the following Course:
Nazi Germany 1918 – 1941 or the United States of America 1918 – 1941
‘Peace War and Neutrality – Britain, Eire and N.Ireland 1933 – 1948
The Cold War 1945 – 1991
While studying this pupils will experience a wide range of historical sources including film, music, diaries, letters and of course a wide range of software will help to support pupils’ understanding of the periods covered.
Key Stage 5 – ‘A’ level
Pupils may take History to A level and while this is a most rigorous and academic subject, pupils at Lisneal have experienced much success and have been able to use top grades in this subject to enter universities like Queen’s University Belfast to study Law and Stranmillis College to study Education. Others have continued their study of History at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. The A level course is a follows:
AS History – Nazi Germany 1918 -1945 and Russia 1905 – 1941
A Level History – Ireland 1800 -1900 and the Partition of Ireland 1900 -1925
