Head of Department: Mrs D Farrell
Staff: Miss H Duddy, Mrs E Mills, Mrs C Miller, Mrs J Norris, Mrs A Thompson
Within the English Department emphasis is placed on oracy and literacy skills. Skilled and experienced teaching staff seek to develop in all pupils the ability to read, understand and respond to various types of text, as well as express and communicate meaning in spoken and written language appropriate to situation, purpose and audience and develop literacy skills necessary for the world of work or further education.
At Key Stage 3 in particular there is a measured balance in affording opportunity to enjoy the study of our language whilst preparing for end of Key Stage Assessment. Pupils are encouraged to pursue their own interests through reading, to visit the library or the theatre and this is sometimes organised within the school. Participation in Speaking or Debating Competitions is encouraged to facilitate the development of oral skills, self-confidence and self-esteem.
All pupils study for formal assessment at Key Stage 4 with some students having the option of studying English Literature. At Advanced level, students taking A level, study Key Skills Communication at Level 3.
