In addition to meeting the mandatory requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, the Art & Design Department aims to develop pupil’s practical skills using a variety of media working in 2 and 3 dimensions. The department aims to provide pupils with a structured, safe, creative and stimulating environment promoting the enjoyment of Art & Design for all pupils regardless of ability.
There is a strong emphasis on observational drawing, learning techniques and providing opportunities for the use of technology through research and practical activities.
The department aims to encourage cooperation and mutual respect through group work as well as promoting individual thinking and problem solving.
Curriculum
All pupils at Key Stage 3 study Art & Design for two 45 minute periods each week. At GCSE level, pupils have four periods, whilst AS and A’level students have eight study periods.
Facilities and Resources
The department is comprised of three large Art studios, one which contains a ceramics studio and a darkroom which has also been converted into an animation studio.
Extra Curricular Activities
The department runs an after school art club two afternoons each week for senior pupils.
Trips
In recent years the department has organised successful trips for As and A’level students to London and Barcelona.
